Demystifying the Party Dress Codes for Women and Men. “Festive attire.” Seriously, does that mean anything? For those who are confused about appropriate party wear — and who isn’t? — BottleMenuService explains today’s often confusing dress codes. Get ready for your night on the Tinsel-town. Every weekend–and weekday–in Los Angeles, Hollywood’s fashionistas dress to the nines and head out to the city’s hottest nightlife party havens. Each venue comes with its own personality and unwritten rules on dress. Style is measured in heel inches, attitude and accessories. People dress well at popular Hollywood clubs because they want to attract attention and of course be seen as attractive. This is not your average city. It is pretty embarrassing to wait in line to get in a current LA top club and then be turned away because you’re not dressed properly.

Most LA top clubs will enforce dress codes of some sort, but the good news is: most of them are pretty much the exact same. Girls can usually get away with anything that at least looks like they ‘tried’, while us guys must adhere to more of a patchwork of exceptions that depend on the club and the person. To make the best impression possible, we recommend guests dress in upscale yet comfortable attire. For the ladies, throw on a long black dress and pair of your favorite heels. For the gents, grab your blazer, throw it over a collared shirt and add the final touch with dress shoes.

Will This Get Me In? Dressing for L.A. nightlife is about getting in tune with the vibe, whether you’re a cool kid, a hipster or channeling old Hollywood. The fabled location of seemingly every sexy, glitzy encounter in contemporary pop culture, nightclubs are saddled with a head-spinning array of expectations and burdens. And chief among them is the fact that simply gaining entry gives one a certain status over everyone else. And dress codes have long been the secret language of L.A. nightlife; fluency can mean the difference between an epic night out and a humiliating kick to the curb. There’s nothing that dresses a room like a crowd! The ambience of the experience is the people around you, so it’s important for us to keep those people fashion-forward and eclectic and interesting and engaging.

What Chic L.A. Wears at Best Clubs in L.A.. Who knows what you can get away with where anymore? As fashion standards relaxed and television and movies took a more central role in American culture, people ceased to dress according to class and began dressing according to character. Today, people dress in costume. An individual wears what he or she wishes to be seen as. And for LA club patrons, such flexibility can be either liberating or paralyzing, depending on their level of comfort with fashion. There are people who can put together a T-shirt and jeans and sneakers and make it look as good as a three-piece suit. And there are people who can wear a three-piece suit and make it look sloppy. It is not uncommon for two people who are wearing the exact same outfit to get a different reaction at the door. Fashion is totally personal now. So it’s kind of a joke when someone says, ‘This is our dress code.’ It’s how a person holds himself up. It’s all personality.

  • First off, What’s not allowed? As you now know, just because it is against the formal dress code doesn’t necessarily mean it won’t occasionally get through the door. Often times if you show up with a very stylish look, things are overlooked. Still, be mindful that these are things that are universally “not allowed” per official dress codes: baggy jeans, sports hats, tennis shoes, shoes that are considered too “sports like,” shorts, cut-offs, Capri’s, jerseys, and beanies.
  • What about denims or jeans? Jeans are completely acceptable at every club in LA. You just want to make sure that your jeans look good, as most LA top clubs frown upon torn, rugged jeans. Also, you shouldn’t try to walk in wearing really baggy jeans. You will get rejected. Probably even laughed at. Bad idea.
  • What about my shoes? You are always safe with leather and dress shoes. You can even occasionally get away with low profile “tennis shoes” as long as they are solid black (including the laces) if they look dressy enough and don’t have any huge logos on them. Have some trendy kicks that you want to wear out? Officially, they aren’t allowed, but most major LA top clubs are relaxing the rules on shoes if you compensate elsewhere in your outfit. Have on a STYLISH collared shirt, tie, jacket, nice pants with your fashionable sports shoes? Technically speaking it’s against the “rules,” but you might be just fine.
  • Sunglasses, yes, the favored hater blockers; every club will allow you to wear them, even though the sun is far gone from the sky. Just because you are allowed in, doesn’t mean that you should commit such an obvious fashion error. Leave them at home, or if you are a girl, wear them as a cute hair piece.

At the end of the day, it is always up to the doorman’s discretion. So your bitching and moaning will likely fall on deaf ears. If you do not feel pretty confident that your style will fall within exceptions, plan on playing it safe by wearing decently fitting jeans, nice shoes and collared shirt; or pair your t-shirt with a nice jacket or sport coat.
